BridgeCrest Medical wants to develop a fatigue management system using wearable technology, to prevent mining truck drivers from falling asleep on the job.

The competitive analysis and market research I conducted showed few fatigue management systems on the market. The major flaw we discovered with the management systems being used today was that they did not track critical metrics required to detect fatigue in drivers before their shifts began.
This provided a huge opportunity for BrideCrest Medical to fulfill a need in the marketplace.
I developed empathy maps and journey maps to understand our users and their schedules. This clarified the flow of the their days or nights and how the technology should operate.
We were then able to flush out the key features that would drive the design of the interfaces. Health metrics would need to be reviewed before each shift, creating a need for easy-to-view data visualization as well as an alert system for the drivers and management. We also added sleep and medical history for review in case of reccurance.
The final design iterations were realized with a desktop dashboard for the medical staff and mobile alert system interfaces.
The smartwatch is worn by the drivers during their shifts and overnight to track and transmit sleeping patterns and health metrics to the BridgeCrest system.
If fatigue was detected, the smartwatch would send out an automatic alert to drivers and management. Health metrics and sleeping patters are also automatically sent to the dashboard system for review by the medical staff.
Sleeping patterns and health metrics are sent to the dashboard along with medical, sleep and alert history.
If fatigue is detected, the driver will recieve a "No Drive Day" alert and be directed to contact the medical staff to setup an exam.
Management will recieve a notification of the "No Drive Day" alert and confirm with the driver and medical staff
The final deliverables included a desktop dashboard interface for the medical staff. This will provide all the data necessary to determine fatigue before the drivers begin their shifts. We also included a mobile interface for drivers and management. All the user research and raw data was provided as well.
The solution to fatigue related incidents is preventative measures. Using wearable technology plus the review and alert system we developed, incidents can be prevented before they occur.
During the course of our research, I understood that an actual alert sound would be necessary. Using my background in sound design, I created 6 options. The alerts were designed to be distinct, but not too aggressive, since they would be sent out shortly after the driver had woken up. The client was pleasantly surprised and will be implementing Alert 2 into the process.

The interviews with our stakeholders, front line mining experts and the on-site medical staff yielded some great insights into the mining and safety cultures. I was able to understand the effects of working in such hazardous situations and the impact that fatigue plays on the workers themselves.
The research identified fatigue as a major contributor to most accidents at mining sites, yet workers tend to ignore the signs of fatigue in order to complete their shifts. My team determined that a system must be put in place to both alert the drivers as well as management and medical staff of their condition.
